Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 6 1-inch thick slices of French bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups half-and-half cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon brandy-based orange liqueur such as Grand Marnier
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup, and cook until the sugar is dissolved. Pour this mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Trim the crusts off the bread and arrange the slices in a single layer in the baking dish. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, brandy, and salt. Pour the mixture over the bread. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature.
  • Bake, uncovered, in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned.
