Total Time 35 minutes mins
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Oil for frying
In a medium bowl or brown paper bag, combine the ½ cup sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon; set aside.
Heat about 2-½ inches of oil in a deep fryer to 375°F.
Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, 2-½ tablespoons sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball.
Once the dough is cool enough to handle, scoop and lightly roll the dough into balls, about the size of walnuts. Fry 3-4 dough balls at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan, until golden brown. Remove from the oil and immediately toss or stir in the reserved cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place on a plate while repeating the process with the remaining dough.
Serve immediately.
While these little treats are fantastic on their own, dipping them into chocolate sauce, melted Nutella, caramel sauce, or dulce de leche adds an extra layer of deliciousness!
Using a cookie scoop helps maintain a uniform size for the poppers, but a rounded measuring spoon works just as well.
When rolling them, be gentle—just enough to form a ball without pressing too hard.
